Feel free to discuss anything that concerns finding new uses for old things. It can be anything from an extensive project to the simplest way to use something in a different way. Just have fun with it (while helping us put less stuff in the landfills).

Do you attend craft fairs? I have to admit, I rarely buy anything there, but I like to go look. It’s often a good source of inspiration.

I like looking in thrift stores, yard sales, and flea markets for “junk” to turn into something cool. Of course, I don’t really see it as junk, but the people getting rid of the stuff often do. I see these places as a gold mine for new projects.
-
Exactly. You look at everything in a different way now, deciding how you can use things in different ways. I think it’s fun as well as creative.
Yep, you can save a lot of money too, which is always a good thing.
-
I like going to Thrift Stores too. About 6 years ago, things were very decently priced, and those stores hit the news a few times, and suddenly the price jacked up, some even more than at other stores. You just need to be a smart shopper!
-
That’s very true. With lots more people into upcycling and such, the prices have definitely gone up.
I still find quite a few treasures though. We have different shops here. Some have nice prieces and some are always higher.

Do you go trash-picking on trash day? Around my neighborhood, it has become a business for many people these past few years. They collected metal to sell for money and recycle whatever they can pick up.
If I see something I can pick up by myself and I could use it, then I would pick up too!
-
so cool to have such day, here, we collect steel, plastic, paper boxes and the recycle truck will come pick them up, pay us too
-
we also sell plastic bottles, newspapers and metals.
-
Same here in my city! The trucks do filled up over the brim with broken appliances and junks!
-
I know people who do, but I’ve never really done it. I haven’t seen any great stuff just sitting there waiting to be picked up. Maybe the people who do this regularly just beat me to it, ha ha. I would stop for a piece of furniture or something on the side of the road. I just haven’t found any yet.

I saw some cute miniature bean bag chairs at the store. I was thinking it would be fun to make one for my little grandbabies. I could make one that looks like a patchwork quilt, using up discarded clothing for the quilted cover.
-
yes, do make one and show us too
-
hope you can make it.
-
Well, I replied in the wrong spot. The post below was about picking trash.
For the chair, I need to figure out what to use to stuff it. It needs to be soft but sturdy too.
-
-
I’ve seen people doing that, but I haven’t done it. I never seem to see all the great stuff they find. Some people get really lucky finding great stuff by the side of the road.

I love reclaimed wood. It just adds character to any project. I like barn wood and stuff like that, but even fallen trees can be made into cool stuff. I’ve seen table bases made from stumps and table tops made from wood slices.
Do you like stuff like this?
-
I love the idea of reclaimed wood, but I am in no shape or form to do this myself.
I have picked up a few end-tables and reworked them to used in my house! I love to find treasures when they are trash to others 🙂-
Nice!
I’m a bit limited myself. I wish I could do bigger projects on my own.
-
-
Yes I love drift wood also
-
Oh, yes, driftwood is so pretty. I saw a tutorial for making wood look like driftwood. I forgot how to do it though. I’ll have to look it up some time.

What about natural elements? Reclaiming stuff from outdoors, maybe even in your own yard, to use as decorative items. Make pretty centerpieces from pine cones, dried flowers, smooth stones. Cover a frame or jar with preserved twigs or leaves. The possibilities are limitless.

Did you know that you can make a stool from used plastic soda bottles? How cool is that?
I really like this idea.

There is a woman named Anna White that builds all kinds of cool furniture on her own. She has a site that gives plans for different pieces, including the tools and materials you need. She is great. It would be even cooler to build some pieces from reclaimed wood.

A large metal can, like a coffee can or paint can, is easy to make into a beautiful planter. You can cover it with plaster in a cool design and then paint it. You can tile over it with rocks, beads, pieces of glass or ceramic, and make a pretty mosaic surface for it.

On Pinterest, there are lots of pins where people painted glass jars or cheap vases to make them into nice, decorative pieces. Have you tried this? I tried one small jelly jar just to test it out. Mine didn’t come out very well. I’m going to have to try again.
Have you had any luck with things like this?

You can make an old, inexpensive bookshelf look like a nice piece of furniture with a little paint of stain and some wood appliques and trim. I’ve seen where people made their plain old pieces look much more substantial with some molding, but I really like the pretty wood appliques. They add interest and nice texture.

I heard about something cool for making quilts. When a loved one passes away, their clothing is used to create a remembrance quilt. I think this is nice idea.
