Question: Have you ever seen the movie “Lincoln” starring Daniel Day Lewis as honest Abe?

Answer: No. However I heard that Mr. Lewis’ performance was stellar. No surprise. Have never known him to ever deliver a shoddy performance. He was outstanding in “The Last of the Mohicans”. Would not expect him to be any less outstanding if given an opportunity to showcase his amazing acting ability in a movie about one of the most beloved presidents of the United States. It’s on my watch list.

Let’s try one more Q & A.

Background Info:

What did William Henry Harrison (1841); John Tyler (1841 – 1845); Zachary Taylor (1849 – 1850); and Millard Fillmore (1850 – 1853) have in common? They were Whigs who served as American presidents. The Whigs is a U.S. political party that existed from 1834 to 1856 and then opted for dissolution or rather chose to merge with the Republican party. Under the strength of these united partisans, Abraham Lincoln was elected the first Republican POTUS.

Quora.com is a Q & A website for intelligent discussion. It was formed by a group of people who used to work for Facebook. It’s a place that is – in my mind – much like the coffee shops or pubs where university students and academics hang out or similar to Mars Hill where the great minds of ancient Rome liked to gather and discuss and debate and hypothesize and theorize and philosophize and … sometimes say stuff that doesn’t make any sense, according to Cicero

One of the questions that was put forward was:

Why do some people consider Abraham Lincoln
the best president?

Took a stab at responding to this question.

Lincoln nearly destroyed the Constitution in order to preserve the union, and he started a war by his aggressive policies toward the southern states that cost more American lives than WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the first Gulf War, Afghanistan, and the Iraq War all put together. He ordered the hanging of 39 Sioux who had the audacity to hunt outside their reservation after Lincoln’s Indian Agents stole the money and food the tribe was supposed to get, and considered the hanging of another 300+. Lincoln jailed nearly half the Maryland legislature to stop them from voting for secession, an act which was not unlawful nor unconstitutional at the time. Also, his Emancipation Proclamation only freed slaves in the states in rebellion, not in the slave states that stayed in the Union.

Am I glad the Union won the war and slavery was ended? Of course. That doesn’t mean I have to stare in starry eyed wonder at his statue in the Lincoln Memorial or condone the way he got those things done.

Yes. I know that there are many who don’t think, feel or believe Abraham Lincoln was the best president and can provide historical facts to back up what they say. Your comments should have been expanded even more and presented as a complete blog post. I would have been more than pleased to link back to the entry. Nevertheless, thanks for visiting and leaving your remarks. They are approved and officially on record for all the world to see. 🙂

Uummm … do I remember you from PersonaPaper? Seems like I’ve had discussions with you about American history before. 🙂

I live in a different country so we may have different political views as far as President Lincoln is concerned. Anyway as I have studied the world history including the American History, I have known Lincoln as the black slave’s deliverer. He is the champion of the oppressed by emancipating the slaves, making them free. In that particular issue, I may consider him as the best President in America.

That’s actually the ONLY reason I consider him the “best President”. Whether the best or the baddest, I will say this: He didn’t deserve to be shot!

Appreciate you stopping by and letting me know you were here. Thank you so much! 🙂
