Blade & Soul Censored By Localization Team To Make It More Welcoming
Blade & Soul

There’s been budding discussion over the past couple of days after a conversation involving the localization of Blade & Soul made it out into the public sphere. The topic in question centered around a side-quest that has been altered in the Western release of NCSoft’s popular game, with the lead senior writer on the localization team citing that the content in the side-quest was “uncomfortable” so they rewrote the entire thing to be more “welcoming”.

Kotaku In Action has been keeping track of a lot of the censorship cases happening in gaming recently, and while people like Jim Sterling have been stating that all of the harsh criticisms leveled at the gaming industry from “culture critics” aren’t intended for the purpose of censorship or to “take your games away”, it has resulted in multiple cases of censorship applied across various games and in various ways that have become more and more public over the past year.

In this most recent case users on the Blade & Soul forum pointed to a thread regarding the lead senior writer on the localization team that goes by the handle of Last Writer Standing, explaining how they had to change a side-quest that involved an adulterer and pervert who enjoyed spying on women, requesting the player (in an optional side-quest) to retrieve the clothes of a group of women while they’re bathing as way for him to solve his impotency problem.

The localization writers felt that this was not something they wanted gamers to experience, with Last Writer Standing explaining in the original Blade & Soul thread

“In previous quests where he sent the [Player Character] off to find what he believed to be home remedy versions of Viagra, instead he’s asking the [Player Character] to help him research different aspects of the Lycandi’s lifestyle to better understand them. The bathing pool quest you mentioned earlier was changed to remove any degree of him spying on the women (while simultaneously poking fun at a bit of meta-humor from the writers involving confusion over the Lycandi character models). The end of the quest chain has him meeting one of the women – a scholar herself among her own people, interested in learning more about his culture as he was about hers.”

So essentially, they made the Lycandi head into the STEM field and changed the pervert into a white knight. It’s a classic romance tale from the new-age Bible of Tumblr-tier social engineering.

The change in the script sent a chill down the fingertips of various gamers who were not pleased with the outcome. The topic was hotly debated on various Doujin and MMO forums before making it to Kotaku In Action. On the Blade & Soul Dojo forum [backup] the topic was locked by the administrator after people complained that the game was being altered by “SJWs” and “feminists”. Administrator Urbancowgurl777 stated the following before locking the thread…

“Never in my life have I seen terms like “feminist” and “SJW” be thrown around so much. Guys, no one cares what box you fit into. Make the arguments more interesting please.”

A few gamers tried defending the change, stating that it wasn’t censorship. Most agreed that it was censorship. One user in particular, going by the handle of Lyndis, did not think they needed to make such a change, replying to a few male users who claimed that the original quest line involving the stealing of the Lycandis’ clothes was an act of “sexual harassment”…

“So as a woman who is comfortable with it what does that tell us?

“The fact of the matter is that it’s a terrible localization practice and it’s a member(s) of the staff changing text and altering in-game events because their own biased “subjective” opinion tells them it is bad/wrong and therefore NOBODY is allowed to view said content. It’s self-censorship and it is disgusting and people should have a zero tolerance policy on it.

“I didn’t pay for you to tell me what content I am/am not allowed to partake in, I paid for you to translate the game into a language I can comprehend and understand.”

An argument broke out over what the job of localization writers are for; a few argued that the localization staff can change the story and characters as they see fit and that “self-censorship” is fine. Others argued that the localization staff should not completely alter the intent of the original creators’ vision. This issue was also part of a heated debated involving the change in dialogue and characterization in the show Prison School where a similar incident occurred with the translation staff, as they decided to take a jab at #GamerGate, which resulted in a 100-plus page forum debate over on Funimation.

In the case of Blade & Soul, the lead senior writer on the localization staff at NCSoft to help bring the game to Western audiences stated that this change was not done for the sake of censorship or to change the cultural intent of the quest, but to make the game more “welcoming” to a more diverse audience, stating…

“It’s not a matter of censorship or anything like that. There are a number of quests and NPC interactions in the game that go into playful innuendos and the like. It’s more a question of whether or not we wanted to include some genuinely questionable and uncomfortable content when we had the ability to make it something more welcoming. When I’m presented with the choice of writing a character and story line that is pretty reprehensible without it being critical commentary on his actions, or reworking it to a more positive direction that isn’t going to make me and others squirm, I’m not exactly going to hesitate to go for the latter.”

The interesting thing about it is that it’s an optional side-quest and if people don’t want to do it… they don’t have to.

What’s more is that who are localizers to dictate what kind of content people should consume based on what they feel is “pretty reprehensible without it being critical commentary on his actions”? That’s the equivalent of removing cannabis from a game because someone doesn’t criticize the smoker for the potential health hazards involved. Or someone removing guns from the game because no one states that guns can be used to kill. Or removing hookers from GTA V because there are no surgeon general warnings that having unprotected sex could result in contracting an incurable venereal disease.

Anyway, the change in the side-quest has not gone over well with most hardcore gamers, especially considering that Blade & Soul is rated ‘M’ for Mature.

Previously Niche Gamer reported that NCSoft had mentioned that the game would not be censored making its way westward. However, as evidenced by the localization staff, it no longer appears as if the highly awaited Western port of the sexually charged MMO will be as uncensored as some people may have hoped.

Blade & Soul launches in North America and Europe on January 19th, 2016.

[Update 11/23/2015: Discussion about censorship in the Western version of Blade & Soul is now banned from the game’s official forums]

I find funny how they try to cover up for the obvious censorship when what they are doing is just that, censorship by definition.

Censorship: the practice of officially examining books, movies, etc., and suppressing unacceptable parts.

““It’s not a matter of censorship or anything like that.”

What a bunch of pretentious assholes. Only morons wouldn’t see through their utter bullshit.

      • blackice85

And they’re completely serious when telling us this shit too.

  • Arbitrary

What the fuck is up with all these localization-translators censoring the shit out of everything, all of a sudden?

    • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

A lot of people tend to think that since they’re too creatively bankrupt to make something people would actually buy, they opt to get into the PR and localization positions in order to change narratives from the inside out.

      Social engineering from within.

      • C G Saturation

There’s that, but I also find that a lot of those assholes have massive egos and zero skills, so they try to “leave their mark” by modifying other people’s stuff and slapping their name on it.

      • Keirnoth

Yeah, the way Xenoblade Chronicles was handled is fucking pathetic. Nintendo goes out of its way to try to market the Wii U to a newer crowd and what do they do? Censor the shit out of it and remove things that don’t have to be removed.

        It’s getting downright frustrating.

      • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

More than anything it would be nice if gamers took the GamerGate hashtag and made it their own. Used it to bring these issues to light instead of constantly cowering in fear of the SJW websites and media.

It already has a built-in base. It already has angry gamers who want corrupt media representation and censorship to end.

I just wish the gaming communities would finally say “enough is enough”. Use the hashtag to connect all these disparate communities and really tell the industry how it is.

The pussy-footing around has only led to the SJWs taking more and more control. How much is too much for them to take before people finally work together to push back?

      • http://g.e-hentai.org GamesGoodMeGood

This is where we get to the issue of the ‘ethics-only’, ‘moderates’, and ‘SJW-lite’ groups within GG.

The pussyfooting seems to be a retarded in-fight within GG amongst the 3 groups I mentioned above, arguing and trying to dictate to people what GG should be about.

There are people within GG who have unmasked themselves as SJW-lites, and some are moderates who want to listen to and accept social justice/feminist viewpoints.

The ‘ethics-only’ brigade are not that bad, but they have this unhealthy habit of trying to tell everyone that GG should only be about the ethics, which is pretty stupid in my opinion because SJWs/feminists are precisely what caused corrupt video games journalism and the forming of GamerGate in the first place. Making it ethics-only is just like plugging up the bullet holes on a sinking ship and completely ignoring the asshole with the gun on board.

I don’t know where you stand on this issue Billy, but the in-fighting is causing big problems for the long run. Do correct me if I’m wrong though.

      • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

        In-fighting is definitely causing problems.

There are a lot of different groups with different opinions about these things. I think for the most part people just need to focus on an issue and attempt to address it.

In this case, the censorship is clear as day with a lot of games and it’s popping up more and more and more. We already know we aren’t getting any help from people like Jim Sterling who have decided to defend his buddies calling for the heads of devs and claiming “it’s not censorship” and “we don’t want to take your games away”.

This also rules out Angry Joe because he’s also friends with them and will defend the censorship as well.

Basically, gamers who enjoy their games the way they were intended to be played by the people who made them, will need to band together and put the petty in-fighting aside.

Is there an actual OP people can focus on? Yes.

Is there a clear way to address these particular issues? Yes. Contact the devs and let them know how you feel.

      • http://g.e-hentai.org GamesGoodMeGood

“Is there a clear way to address these particular issues? Yes. Contact the devs and let them know how you feel.”

I think this will depend on the developer’s best interests themselves. I’m very confident that there are a ton of devs out there who deep down are just as sick and tired of this SJW/feminist bullshit as we are, but do not speak out against it in fear of being ostracised and losing their job.

You are very correct that we should contact the devs and let them know how we feel. The further step to this is to unite the devs into speaking as a whole, and not individually.

Devs speaking out as a whole = win
Dev speaking out as an individual = suicide

      • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

Agreed. Devs trying to solo the storm will just get burned to the ground, but they’ll fare much better coming out collectively.

      • Ben (Broken)

This 100%. When some of my friends began “burning out” and declared themselves as neutrals I was fine with that. I was even ok with the people who thought Milo was a bit insensitive when it came to trans issues and the people who stated GG should be less about witch hunts and more about ethics in general. But yet some of these aforementioned people just seem to be trolls now. Here are the “types” I deal with.

        1. The guy who is “neutral” yet instead of simply talking about good games spends all his time bitching how GG went into the shitter. I mean it’s ok to hold that opinion I just rather you not bring it up every other tweet. Would you like some cheese with that whine, sir?

        2. The “sjw apologists” who pretty much start any argument with “Y’know, not everything going wrong is cuz of feminists or sjws!” This is true but let’s be honest, usually when an American-branch of a Japanese publisher decides not to release certain games state side, removes content, or a localization of a game is altered to be “not as dark’ or “not as offensive” it is usually because somewhere in that whole mess of a turd-storm someone with “progressive values” is trying to leave their shit smeared mark on things.

        3. The person who says “Wah,cry me a river, just import the game!” Oh sure bud, because every imported game has an english language option and won’t charge me an arm and a leg in shipping fees. But hey,I’ll simply learn Japanese & Korean with my madd linguistic decryption skills and pay twice the normal retail price cuz I’m uber hardcore like that! No,fuck you!

      • http://g.e-hentai.org GamesGoodMeGood

        In response to your points:

        1. This so-called “neutral” an ‘ethics-only’ cuck or a SJW-lite I presume?

        2. You are absolutely correct. Therefore discard SJW-apologists immediately without hesitation. There is a reason why they would want to apologize for those parasites.

        3. Also, it’s about the principles and the precedents it could set for the future. Team Ninja has decided not to release Dead Or Alive Extreme 3 to the West because of SJWs/feminists. Yet Jim Sterling, Anita Sarkeesian and the her SJW feminist brigade claim they’re not here to “take your games away”.

      • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

Ahaha.. the no 1., sounds like some butthurt people who tried to become e-celebs but failed.

The no. 2 people annoy the piss out of me. All the hopping around and skipping over the common sense logic to not blame the SJWs is just annoying. We all know SJWs aren’t freaking Obama, who apparently is the cause of all the world’s ills. But even still, it’s pretty obvious to draw straight parallel lines from a dev changing content to be more “inclusive” to the outrage nonsense that the SJWs cook up.

For the people in no. 3… you summed up all the cucks in 4chan who said they were tired of #GamerGate and didn’t mind it being censored. It’s hilarious seeing them throw hissy fits on there, now that their games really are being taken away.

      • Keirnoth

Heh, 20 days later and now we have a new hashtag to tell the Japanese game devs we like their stuff.

I swear, you come up with the best ideas man.

      • SiliconNooB

I’ll no longer be buying Xenoblade.

      • buddyluv324

I wouldnt be surprise if there was some sort of financial gain for the localization team with all the censoring in games as of late.

      • Adam Zaorski

        You Sir are right.

The sad part is, during my law studies they tought us we, the lawyers, should be social engineers.

Nowdays a basementdweller who knows japanese/korean and knows jack shit about law can be one.

      • Uranus

Never has a feminist argument been “create something new”. If it exists, a feminist will demand it be changed. As we saw with Linkle, if you actually create something new, feminists will bitch and moan.

    • jlenoconel

      One name, Anita Sarkeesian.

  • C G Saturation

That was still there in the Chinese version. I thought it was kind of strange to have such a perverse quest, but I didn’t really care.

Blade and Soul’s story cutscenes show *SPOILER* little kids getting slaughtered and committing suicide *END SPOILER*. It’s not meant to be a game for little kids to play. It’s an adult game. The West needs to grow the hell up. Nobody in several Eastern countries cared about that, so they’re obviousy mature enough. Are Western people so mentally immature and weak in spirit that their fragile minds need to be shielded from basic facts of reality?

Also, so much for people telling me the Western version isn’t censored. If I recall correctly, it’s not even a required quest. You don’t have to do it.

  • https://t.co/KaouMvYkgh Lord Nurgle

They said the game will not be censored, yet they are censoring the game. SOudns like they committed to anti-consumerist sins, Lied to the customers and openly practicing censorship. I would refuse to even play or buy the game, fuck that noise.

  • John Smith

There’s a thread on the official forums titled “What did you do to the story?”
which contains a list of all the things the translation team “8-4’d” in the westernization process. from removing the meaning of titles and names and straight up re-written story elements.
    Absolutely disgusting

    • http://g.e-hentai.org GamesGoodMeGood

There really should be a regulation board of some sort to keep an eye on this sort of thing.

Because in localization staffs, you can bet that there will always be a bitter, insecure little prude in there with a feminist agenda.

  • http://g.e-hentai.org GamesGoodMeGood

“It was [company/devs] decision to censor it”
“[company/devs] censored it themselves, not us”
“The censored version actually looks better”
    “It doesn’t affect the storyline”
“It’s trivial and doesn’t affect the gameplay”
    “It doesn’t matter”
“I love the new censored version! It’s better!”
“We just don’t want this becoming porn”
“[Censored character] is still in the game, there is no censorship”
“They changed it, not censor it!”
“You cannot restrict something you own”
“You cannot self-censor your own product”

The pathetic bread and butter SJW/feminist/white knight excuses to try to disguise and justify censorship.

  • Fenrir007

It really seems like localization teams have been deeply infected with the SJW bug. Thank god for XSEED!

    • http://www.OneAngryGamer.net Billy

Their rep was a real martyr taking the fall at NeoGaf while trying to spread a little bit of common sense and truth.

      • TheGreatGamerGod

May the rep rest in peace.

      • Fenrir007

That was absolutely beautiful. A noble sacrifice.

  • Fient

localizers with SJW infestations or SJW fears are one of the worst cancers of the industry
the day machine translation gets good enough to entirely get rid of them will be great

  • Gamer

I understand this game isn’t for me, I’m not a fan, I’m not the target audience. So I’m commenting from a broad aspect and generalizing.

When will these people learn that changing a niche game to appease an audience that would never play the game anyway is bad. The people that DO care about the game want their niche game the way it was intended.

The quest looks minor and is optional. Sounds like it was meant to add flavor to the world and get a small reaction of laughter at what’s going on. It’s not an explicit approval of behavior. If that were so, then Skyrim is asking everyone to shoot their friends in the knee with an arrow.

Never piss off the fans, because they are who buys your game. Localization teams are coming under fire deservedly for changing things they deem immoral. Optional content is optional. If someone really didn’t like that outfit in Maiden Black 5 that you only get for beating the game? Don’t use it. Heck, you probably would have never replayed the game w/o perks like that.

Remember the DMC outcry? Fans of Devil May Cry were the people that were going to buy the game. Changing the main character to an emo teen douche isn’t going to bring in some new audience that doesn’t like the games. Then mocking fans of the first 4 games? Classy.

  • Keinart

Great article, I was reading things out there but this article is the best of them all, everything is pretty clear.

Now, about the subject, this is just fucking crazy. Translator should just translate, all this moral changes as if they could decide what is best for the audience or not is ridiculous. You don’t like it? Then fuck it, your work is translating it as it is, maybe just making a few localization changes to make sure it’s understandable, and that’s it, going above that it’s NOT your job, you are NO ONE to decide what is morally acceptable for me or not. If I was ahead of this companies and I heard of a translator doing this kind of job I would inmediately blacklist him for not doing his job properly.

  • Getting Gay With Kids

This localizer team. FUCK! This fucking infuriates me. It’s not your fucking job to police my fucking content. Calling it now. If SJWs like this assholes get their way, all games will be bland bullshits about the fee fees where you have no characters with any negative character traits outside of being white and male. They are fucking ruining this industry.

  • Trance

    >to make it more welcoming
to who, exactly ? SJW dont play video games.

    • TheGreatGamerGod

No they don’t play them, but the bastards are very good at getting each other jobs in the industry. When they were all booted out of the games reviewing business they either holed up at Polygon or got each other jobs at development houses.

Some examples are Cara Ellison went to work at Arkane and will be putting her SJW mark on Dishonoured 2, and more recently Gamespot’s former SJW queen Kevin Van Ord went to work at Trion Worlds. He’ll be screwing up any MMO’s they develop or translate in the near future.

Perhaps Gamergate 2.0 will be burning them out from the places they landed within the industry?

  • magicalfollower

I was actually interested in playing game. *sigh*
