A new guide for the standalone of DayZ has gone live to help players become the Legolas of DayZ; the Robin Hood of Chernarus; the Katniss of the zombie apocalypse. The guide features a detailed look at how to acquire the materials to make an ashwood short bow, as well as how to gather composite arrows, how to make improvised arrows and what you’ll need to do in order to kill zombies like one tough, arrow-lobbing son of a gun.
The guide comes courtesy of the ever-growing-in-popularity YouTube user WOBO. This guy has some of the most detailed and pedantic video guides you’ll find across the entirety of the internet. His elocution is righteous; his knowledge is sound; he is DayZ educated.
The video only runs for five and a half minutes, but it’s enough to gather everything you could possibly need to make good on bow crafting.
In fact, crafting a bow isn’t quite as difficult as you might think. All you need is an axe, a machete or knife and a piece of rope. If you don’t have any of those items, you can find them at industrial complexes, sheds or warehouses… or the corner pub on a housing block.
Use the axe to cut down specific ashwood trees to get the wood. Craft together the wood and the rope to make a bow. He notes in the video that it’s easy to mistakenly make a fishing rod, so you’ll definitely want to avoid that… unless you really like whistling and fishing. But whistling and fishing doesn’t kill zombies and it certainly doesn’t prevent you from becoming a naked, handcuffed victim of a post-apocalyptic bandit with a penchant for tea-bagging newbs.
The video also rolls out the details on crafting arrows if you can’t find composite arrows – the latter can be found at the usual ammo spawn points, but they’re rare or only come in stacks of five.
Making arrows is about as easy as stabbing a newb and taking a can of spam: you just use your knife to hack down some bushes for sticks, and you gather up some chickens, kill them for the feathers and make your arrows. Of course, you’ll need to find chickens first… they’re located at either Kozlovka, Nadezhdino, Vyshnoye or Msta. Once you kill and skin a chicken you’ll get 20 feathers, so, you shouldn’t have to kill too many chickens to get an ample supply of feathers.
The video specifically discusses where in each location you can find the chickens, though. Check it out below.
One thing you’ll need to keep in mind is that you’ll need to sharpen your sticks to make them into decent arrows. This means that you’ll either need a machete, axe or hacksaw. If any of your weapons are too dull to sharpen the sticks, you can use some rocks from just about anywhere to sharpen your tools before you can sharpen the sticks. Meta-gaming at its finest.
WOBO has some of the coolest guides out there for the standalone of DayZ and I’m sure he’s the one you’re going to want to keep an eye on when vehicles get added to the game. In the meantime you can keep an eye on DayZ and its progress by visiting the Official Website. The game is currently available in its alpha state over on Steam’s Early Access platform.
